Carl David Bouché

Carl David Bouché ( born June 4, 1809 in Berlin, † September 27, 1881 ibid, . Spelling Karl David Bouché, David Karl Bouché, David Bouché, Jr. ) was a German gardener, gardening teacher, author, greenhouse designer and director of the Royal Botanical Gardens Berlin, as well as a painter. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " CDBouché ".

Life and work

Carl David Bouché was a scion of the Berlin gardener Dynasty Bouché. He was the son of Peter Carl Bouché, as well as the father of Julius Bouché (1846-1922) and Friedrich Bouché ( 1850-1933 ).

He was the most famous botanists of the family.

From 1839 to 1843 Carl David Bouché worked as a gardener. In 1843 he was then appointed as an inspector ( = technical director) of the Royal Botanic Garden Berlin -Schöneberg. This office he held for 30 years until his death in 1881. His successor was William Perring.

He dealt intensively with the development of greenhouses. He tried experimentally to find out the optimal design and shape iron greenhouses. His findings he summarized in a book that is (apart from the work " glass houses of all kinds " of Louis Neumann, 1842), one of the basic manuals of the 19th century greenhouses. It was only in 1886 after his death, edited by his son Julius Bouché, himself a greenhouse in the Botanical Garden Bonn -Poppelsdorf built, which is greatly influenced by the Berlin house.

In this book he shows, among other things, plans and details of the Great Palm House (built 1857-1858 ) and the first Victoria regia - house ( built in 1863 ) of the Royal Botanic Gardens to Schöneberg.

This " Great Palm House " was the second after erected in 1821 by Karl Friedrich Schinkel smaller predecessor wooden house had been torn down yet again in the same year because Durchfaulung of structural beams. The new house was constructed in iron - frame construction and consisted of cubic forms; it corresponded to the current factual style of the time. Carl David Bouché starred with his service as Secretary-General of the Berlin Society for the promotion of horticulture. As such, he was secretary, editor and librarian. He was also active as an artist garden. His design for the Cemetery of the Twelve Apostles Church is preserved. He was also a teacher for gardening and fruit growing on agricultural training institute in Berlin.

He was active also been intensively as a self-taught botanist. The International Plant Names Index ( IPNI ) found 61 entries for its botanical name tag CDBouché, including many Ficus species such as the weeping fig and other known houseplants. He crossed 16 new lily hybrids ( " mongrels " ), including " Nymphaea × boucheana ".

He also worked as a painter.
