Carl Euler

Carl Jerome Euler ( * 1834 in Basel, † November 27, 1901 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Swiss- Brazilian bird collector and ornithologist.

Life

After finishing high school in Basel Euler in 1853 emigrated to Brazil. In the favela near Rio de Janeiro, he acquired the farm Fazenda do Born Vallé. He also held the office of the Swiss vice-consul in Rio de Janeiro. In his spare time he dedicate preparing the bird watching in the surrounding area. As Euler took up 1867 Contact Jean Louis Cabanis, several of his technical papers have been published on the reproductive biology of Brazilian Vogeltaxa in the Journal of Ornithology. His work on the breeding and the eggs of Brazilian birds were released in the vintages 1867-1869. 1877 had to drop his bird studies in the favela and move to Rio de Janeiro Euler. His contact with Hermann von Jhering enabled him, however, continue his ornithological work. Euler's records were published in Ihering work " Revista do Museo Paulista " 1900. Euler studied the nests, eggs and breeding seasons of 223 Vogeltaxa. He was also an avid bird collector, whose bellows material is preserved in the Berlin Museum of Natural History and the Brazilian National Museum in Rio de Janeiro.

Dedikationsnamen

Cabanis called the Euler - Schnäppertyrann ( Lathrotriccus euleri ) in honor of Carl Euler. In his first description he wrote:

" Mr. Consul Euler in Cantagallo, in honor of which I name this new species has, in his understanding " contributions " provided highly estimable observations on the habits of this kind and the Berlin Museum with a copy sent to the same. "
