Carl Friedrich Gauss Prize

The Carl Friedrich Gauss Prize ( after Carl Friedrich Gauss ) is a prize in applied mathematics.

The prize is awarded in conjunction with the Fields Medals and the Nevanlinna Prize at the every four years event, the International Congress of Mathematics ( ICM ) to a mathematician whose work has a significant impact on areas outside of mathematics. The prize is awarded jointly by the International Mathematical Union and the German Mathematical Society. The price will be financed from surpluses from the ICM in Berlin in 1998 and consists of a medal and a cash prize. Do not confuse the Carl Friedrich Gauss Prize is awarded annually to the Gauss Prize of the German Society for Insurance and Financial Mathematics and the German Actuarial Association.

As the first prize winner in 2006 the Japanese Kiyoshi Itō was passed on the ICM in Madrid the medal with prize money of 10,000 euros.
