Carl Georg Oscar Drude

Carl Georg Oscar Drude ( born June 5, 1852 in Braunschweig, † February 1, 1933 in Dresden ) was a German botanist, Professor and co-founder of plant ecology as a scientific discipline. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Drude ".

Life

Originally from an old Brunswick family doctor's son studied from 1870 science and chemistry at the Collegium Carolinum (now Technical University ) in his hometown and moved in 1871 to the University of Göttingen. There Drude became an assistant to August Grisebach. He held until 1879 this office.

In 1874, Drude finished his studies with a PhD " Dr. phil. ". Subsequently, he got a job as Herbarassisstent Friedrich Gottlieb Bartling. There in Göttingen, he also worked as a lecturer in botany. In 1876 Drude habilitated in botany. In 1879, he accepted a professorship at the Polytechnic Institute in Dresden and has held a chair of botany there. Also since 1879, he was a member of the Leopoldina.

As in 1890, the Polytechnic was awarded the status of an Institute of Technology, Drude had great influence in the transformation of scientific, especially the botanical chairs. In the same year the Botanical Garden was in Dresden with a Drude competent and dedicated director. Together with Bruno Steglich divided the garden a Drude Agricultural Experimental Station of Plant culture.

In his work, The Ecology of Plants, he was one of the founders of this department.

Oscar Drude died in 1933 in Dresden. His grave is in the local St. John's Cemetery.

Honors

He was the genus Drudeophytum Coult honor. & Rose of the plant family of Umbelliferae ( Apiaceae ) named. Also from 1961 to 1964 published journal Drudea is named after him.

The TU Dresden gave in 1953 the building of the Botanical Institute of the name " Drude - building ".
