Carl Göring

Carl Theodor Göring ( born April 28, 1841 in Brüheim, † April 2, 1879 in Eisenach ) was a German philosopher and chess master.

Goring, in 1877 associate professor at the University of Leipzig was, as a philosopher, a representative of critical empiricism and positivism.

He was the only son of a rich landowner. After finishing school in Eisenach he could lead a materially prosperous life as a private scholar and lived for a time in Berlin, Bonn and Gotha. In 1872 he fell ill with rheumatism, in the following years he fell into disrepair in depression. He died by suicide.

Goering also gained importance as a strong German chess master who successfully operated in the 1870s in tournaments. 4th place in Krefeld in 1871, 3rd place in Leipzig in 1871, 3rd place in Altona in 1872, 2nd place in Leipzig in 1876 At the tournament in Leipzig in 1877 ( Goring was fifth ) brought him victory against Adolf Anderssen. Goering was one of the initiators of the founding of the German Chess Federation and one of its founding members in 1877 in Leipzig.
