Carlos Gomes Júnior

Carlos Gomes Júnior called Cadogo ( born December 19, 1949 in Bolama ) was from 2004 to 2005 and from 2009 to 2012 Prime Minister of Guinea- Bissau.

Life

From 1963 to 1967 he attended high school in Portugal, after which he went to the trade school in Bissau. After the country's independence from Portugal, he studied finance and banking in Dakar and Quebec. Later he became a banker and businessman. He is regarded as the richest man in Guinea -Bissau.

In addition to numerous positions in the economy of Guinea -Bissau Gomes is the founder and president of the local Rotary Club.

Political career

Gomes heard since the time of the independence war against Portugal, the Partido Africano da Independencia da Guiné e Cabo Verde ( PAIGC ), which ruled the country until 1999. He became a deputy in the National Assembly and Parliament Vice- President in 1996. Since 1998, he sits on the Politburo of the PAIGC and is chairman of the party since February 2002.

After the election victory of his party in March 2004, he was on May 9, 2004 Prime Minister of a coalition government. The PAIGC alone reached 33.88 % of the votes in the elections.

On 6 October 2004, the Army Chief of Staff, Veríssimo Correia Seabra killed in a mutiny. Gomes explained that there were former members of the peacekeeping force of the United Nations ( UNMIL) was that were previously stationed in Liberia and were applied over unpaid wages payments.

In October 2005, 14 of the 45 MPs of the PAIGC split off from the party. A resignation rejected Gomes. Another problem was his tense ratio for October 1, again acting President João Bernardo Vieira. Gomes had spoken during the presidential elections against Vieira and his party colleague Malam Bacai Sanhá supported. After the first meeting since the election, both agreed to a cohabitation ready. On October 29, 2005, President Vieira announced the release of Gomes and his government. Aristides Gomes, one of the 14 MPs who have left the PAIGC fraction was determined on 2 November 2005 as the successor and sworn in immediately.

After the parliamentary elections of 16 November 2008 in which the PAIGC won a two-thirds majority of the seats, Gomes was asked to form a government and sworn in on January 2, 2009 as the Prime Minister. On 10 February 2012, he resigned from the post of prime minister to stand in the presidential elections. To his successor, he appointed Acting Minister of Communications Adiato Diallo Nandigna. After Gomes Júnior at 49%, the absolute majority fell just short in the first round of the presidential elections in March 2012, the government was overthrown by a military coup on April 12, 2012 ahead of the scheduled April 29 for the second round. Gomes Júnior and interim President Raimundo Pereira were arrested by the coup.
