Carlos Quintana (boxer)

Carlos Quintana ( born November 6, 1976 in Moca, Puerto Rico ) is a Puerto Rican professional boxer and former WBO welterweight champion.

Boxing career

As an amateur Quintana won in Puerto Rico a few national championships, so he was allowed to participate for Puerto Rico in the 1996 Olympics. Quintana had an amateur record of 62 wins ( 48 by KO) in 70 fights.

1997 Quintana professional. Having remained undefeated in 21 professional fights, he received the 2006 opportunity in his native Puerto Rico against the Argentine Raul Eduardo Bejarano for the vacant WBO Latino welterweight belt to fight. Bejareno went in round 10 after a hit from Quintana to the ground from which he still once recovered, but then pocketed more hits. The fight was stopped, Quintana won by TKO.

In the ensuing battle on 24 June 2006 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas against Colombian Joel Julio Quintana fought for the WBC Latino welterweight belt and to the right to a welterweight title fight the WBA. In this fight Quintana dominated by his boxing skills and hit the hard-hitting Julio clear on points.

On December 2, 2006 Quintana fought in Atlantic City against his fellow countryman Miguel Cotto, who had risen as WBO champion from the Super Lightweight, for the vacant at this time WBA world championship title at welterweight. Quintana had problems with the faster Cotto and suffered in this battle many body shots. In the fifth round Quintana went to a hit to the ribs to the ground, but was able to escape into the break. Since he did not recover in the round break from that hit, he gave up the struggle.

Just one year later was found to be boxing for Quintana another chance at a world championship title. The reigning at that time WBO champion Paul Williams looked for the injury-related cancellation of the intended as an opponent Kermit Cintron a replacement. Quintana showed in this fight good defensive qualities and was able to defeat the undefeated champion to date on points.

Four months later, the rematch against Paul Williams took place. Williams succeeded Quintana already put down twice in the first round. The fight was stopped and then Williams was a world champion again.

After fighting Quintana Williams rose to the super welterweight. In this class, he had won twice before the prospect of a new world championship fight caused him once again to compete in the welterweight division. On 10 October 2010 he met the WBC champion Andre Berto. Quintana had problems with the younger and faster Berto and lost the fight in the eighth-round technical knockout when the referee broke off the fight.
