Carme Chacón

Carme Chacón Piqueras i ( born March 13, 1971 in Esplugues de Llobregat, Province of Barcelona ) is a Spanish politician of the Partit dels Socialistes de Catalunya (PSC). From April 2008 to December 2011 she was Minister of Defence in the Cabinet Zapatero.

Chacón studied law at the University of Barcelona and became a professor of constitutional law at the University of Girona. In 1994, she joined the PSC. Since 2000 she is a member of the Congress of Deputies (lower house of the Spanish Parliament ), the Vice President, she worked from 2004 to 2007. In the cabinet reshuffle on July 6, 2007, she was the successor María Trujillo to the Minister for Housing. From April 2008 to December 2011 she was Minister of Defence of the IX legislature; she was the first woman who occupies this office in Spain. She went to the office in the seventh month of pregnancy.

After the electoral defeat of the PSOE in the Spanish parliamentary elections in 2011, she applied for the post of Secretary General of the party, but was defeated in the election at the party 4 February 2012 just under Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba opposite.
