Carretera Central (Cuba)

The Carretera Central (abbreviated "CC" ) is the largest highway in Cuba. At around 1,250 km, it crosses the island from east to west direction. With the exception of Cienfuegos, the Carretera Central combines all the capitals of the current 15 provinces of the country.

History

Under the rule of the dictator Gerardo Machado, the construction of the dual carriageway began on 20 May in 1927 and ended on 24 February 1931.

Until the revolution under Fidel Castro, she was in some rural areas in eastern Cuba the only paved road. The easternmost section of the Carretera Central was built in 1964-1965. The La Farola called, 120 km long mountain road crosses the " Sierra de Purial " and since then combines the former capital of Baracoa first time on the land with the rest of Cuba.
