Provinces of Cuba
Cuba is divided into fifteen provinces and one special municipality.
List of Provinces
In Cuba, there are the following provinces ( from west to east):
On 1 January 2011, the province of La Habana was dissolved. It created two new provinces of Artemisa and Mayabeque. The Ciudad de La Habana province was given the name of the old province of La Habana. The new division of the provinces was part of an administrative reform, which provides a clearer division of labor of People's Power, and an extension of the competences of the individual provinces. It should also be strengthened by the creation of new regional centers ' sense of belonging Cubans living there and the quality of government services more efficient.
History
1827-1878
1827 Cuba was divided by the Spanish colonial government into three departments:
- Occidental
- Central
- Oriental
1878-1976
The Spanish colonial government subdivided Cuba in 1878 (or 1879, depending on the source ) in six provinces:
- Pinar del Río
- Matanzas
- Las Villas ( prior to 1940: Santa Clara), the province comprised the present provinces of Cienfuegos, Sancti Spiritus and Villa Clara
- La Habana, consisting of the present provinces of Artemisa, La Habana and Mayabeque
- Camagüey (before 1899: Puerto Príncipe ), comprised the present provinces of Camagüey and Ciego de Ávila
- Oriente ( before 1905: Santiago de Cuba ), comprised the present provinces of Las Tunas, Granma, Holguin, Santiago de Cuba and Guantánamo
