Castelnovo ne' Monti

Castelnovo ne ' Monti (on Emilian Castelnōv di Munt ) is a town with 10,496 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the Italian province of Reggio Emilia in Emilia -Romagna. It is located 41 km south of Reggio Emilia and 101 km west of Bologna. The name derives from Castrum novum ( new castle ), with the addition in the mountains, here.

Geography

The city is the capital of the Emilian Apennines. It lies at the foot of the Pietra di Bismantova ( 1047 mslm ), one of the most prominent mountains in the northern Apennines. The mountain is a popular climbing destination with difficult climbing routes. The mountain is also mentioned by Dante Alighieri in one of his verses.

The municipality consists of the districts of Costa de ' Grassi, Felina, Gatta, Garfagnolo and Gombio. She is a member of the Comunità Montana dell'Appennino Reggiano.

The nearby towns are Busana, Carpineti, Casina, Canossa, Ramiseto, Vetto and Villa Minozzo.

Traffic

Castelnovo is developed by the Strada Statale 63 del Valico del Cerreto, which runs from Aulla in Tuscany to Reggio Emilia.
