Casti village

Casti - Wergenstein ( Romansh: Casti - Vargistagn ) is a municipality in the district of Shams in the district of Rhein Behind the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms refers to the name of the town: the castle tower is for Casti, the three rock for ( Wergen - ) stone.

Geography

The municipality comprises the widely separated districts Casti ( 1125 m) and Wergenstein ( 1489 m) at the bottom Schamserberg. Of the total municipal area of ​​2559 ha 1343 ha agricultural Nutzgebiet (of which 1275 ha Alpine farms ), 998 ha of unproductive area (mostly mountains), 203 hectares of forest and woodland and 15 ha settlement area.

Languages

Original language of the inhabitants is Sutselvisch, a Grison Romanesque dialect. The community remained almost monolingual until the First World War. History

The municipality was created in 1923 from the merger of the municipalities Casti and Wergenstein. Casti has been inhabited since the Early Middle Ages. A first church was built in the 12th, a free peasant commune in the 13th century. In the 1530s, the Reformation was introduced. Wergenstein was already in the 6/7 Populated century and led shortly after Casti the Reformation. In the church of Casti, there are frescoes of Waltensburger master.
