Castle Campbell, originally glume Castle, is a castle near the Scottish town of Dollar in Clackmannanshire unitary authority. In 1960, the building was added to the Scottish lists of monuments in the highest category A. In addition, the building is protected as a Scheduled Monument since 1950.

History

The oldest parts of the castle date from the early 15th century. By marriage she became the property of Colin Campbell, 1st Earl of Argyll and thus belong to the clan Campbell from today Argyll and Bute. For the coming of the Highlands, the Campbells located in the Lowlands castle proved on the basis of their proximity to Stirling Castle, the principal residence of the Scottish kings, as a favorable location. In 1489 they changed the name of Castle Castle glume in the today common Castel Campbell. Around this time the tower house was built, which today determines the appearance of the plant significantly. In the early 16th century, the plant was expanded to include the three-story Südkomplex. Many important personalities endowed Castle Campbell a visit. Around the year 1600, the two upstairs were revised. Furthermore, the numerous details of the royal wing of Stirling Castle was a two-story building complex on the opposite courtyard side added picks. During the 17th century Castle Campbell was twice attacked and severely damaged. So burned troops of the Earl of Montrose, the castle in 1645 during the English Civil War down. With the execution of the clan chiefs of the Campbells, Archibald Campbell, 1st Marquess of Argyll, for treason in 1661 ended the importance of Castle Campbell as a seat of power. George William Campbell, 6th Duke of Argyll sold the lands at the beginning of the 19th century. 1948 Castle Campbell was charged in state administration and is managed by Historic Scotland since the 1950s.
