Castle of Mey

The (formerly called Barrogill Castle) Castle of Mey is located in the extreme north- east of Scotland near John o 'Groats in Caithness.

The castle was, 4th Earl of Caithness built in the 16th century by George Sinclair. By the end of the 19th century it was used by the Earls of Caithness as a residence, but then passed outside the family and the plant partly decayed. In good weather from the castle you can see the Orkney Islands.

1952 bought Queen Elizabeth, that of the recently deceased King George VI. Widow, the estate. She came from Scotland and felt at home in seclusion. It was the only property that belonged to her ever own. She left the Castle of Mey fundamentally renovate. Among other things, she knew it the first time with electricity and water connection. It was used by her from 1955 until her death as a vacation home in the months of August and October.

According to the testamentary provisions was established after her death in 2002, the Queen Elizabeth Castle of Mey Trust, which now manages the estate. It is open to the public, if it is not used by members of the royal family. Prince Charles holds here usually in early August for a week there on.

In the castle of the spirit of the green Lady said to be haunted. It should be the daughter of the 5th Earl of Caithness. This was in love with a farm worker and was therefore imprisoned by her father on the castle grounds. From heartbreak she threw herself from a window to death.
