Catete Palace

The Catete Palace, is the former government palace in Brazil Catete neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro. Him in the Museu República ( Museum of the Republic ) and a theater today are housed there.

It was built by the German architect Gustav Wähnelt as the residence of the Luso- Brazilian coffee baron Antonio Clemente Pinto, Baron of Nova Friburgo. It was bought in 1896 by the Brazilian government and used as the seat of the President in the then capital of Rio de Janeiro. After Rio lost its function as the country's capital to Brasília, the palace was rebuilt and then opened by the then President Juscelino Kubitschek on 15 November 1960 as the Museu República again. The date was chosen because the proclamation of the Republic of Brazil jährte that day.

The museum now houses about 20,000 books, 7,000 exhibits and 80,000 documents in the history of Brazil, as well as works of art, documents and furniture of former President Getúlio Vargas.
