Cathedral Church of St Marie, Sheffield

The St. Mary's Cathedral ( Cathedral Church of St Marie) in the industrial city of Sheffield is the bishop's church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Hallam. It was built in 1846-1850, designed by Matthew Ellison Hadfield in the Gothic Revival style.

History

The first post-Reformation Catholic chapel in Sheffield in the early 19th century as a result of the Industrial Revolution soon became too small. For financial basis for the construction of the present church, the family of the Dukes of Norfolk made ​​a decisive contribution. In 1850, the year of the restoration of the Catholic hierarchy in England, the new parish church was taken under the patronage of the Virgin Mary in use. The solemn consecration followed by removal of all debt 1889.

During World War II, most of the stained glass windows could be saved by outsourcing. An interior renovation to adapt to the liturgical requirements of Vatican II took place from 1970 to 1972.

On 30 May 1980, Pope John Paul II, the diocese of Hallam parts of the dioceses of Leeds and Nottingham and brought to St. Mary's Cathedral.

Architecture and Facilities

Hadfield designed the St. Mary's Church, following the example of St. Andrew's in Heckington in forms of the English Decorated style. She is a three-aisled basilica with a low geostete transept and recessed choir. Its conclusion is as in Heckington a straight wall with a large window tracery. Also the main tower in the southwest corner towers with conical tip and four similar to the model. To the east of the frontage, the parish building in the Tudor style joins.

The equipment with sculptures, carvings and picture windows from the 19th century is almost completely preserved.

The organ dates back to an instrument that had been built in 1875 by organ builder Thomas Christopher Lewis ( London). In 1973, the instrument of the organ builder Chalmers & Hyde has been revised, with the entire tracker actions were exchanged. The organ now has 24 registers on three manuals and pedal. The tracker action are mechanical.
