Caudium

Caudium was an ancient city in Samnium ( Central Italy ).

Caudium lay on the Appian Way between Capua and Benevento, at today's Montesarchio. The original inhabitants of the city were the Samnite Caudini. Later it was a Roman municipium.

Caudium is famous mainly because of the fantastic nearby " Caudine passes" ( furculae Caudinae ). There, suffered an army of the Roman Republic during the Second Samnitenkriegs 321 BC a severe defeat, which forced Rome to accept an ignominious peace ( literally the " Caudinische yoke ", under the Roman legionaries were forced ).
