It belongs to the district of Santa Cruz das Flores, and has 77 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011).

To the origin of the place name Caveira (Portuguese for skull ) are circulating a number of legends.

History

The island of Flores was settled around 1500. The community Caveira was founded much later. 1767 was built the first church here, an independent municipality was Caveira 1823.
