Cefuroxime is a drug and a chemical compound selected from the group of β -lactam antibiotics. The substance is used in medicine as an antibiotic and belongs to the second generation cephalosporins. The bactericidal effect is due to inhibition of an enzyme which is required for the construction of the peptidoglycan cell wall.

Spectrum of activity

Cefuroxime is in comparison to the first generation cephalosporins increased activity against gram -negative rods, especially against Haemophilus influenzae. Resistances have enterococci and Pseudomonas. Cefuroxime has a high stability against β -lactamases.

Indications

Cefuroxime is used for acute and chronic bacterial infections such as respiratory tract, the kidneys, the skin. Moreover, it is applied for the treatment of sepsis. Cefuroxime is the only 2nd generation cephalosporin that is liquorgängig and thus the agent of first choice for meningitis caused by cefuroxime susceptible pathogens.

Application

Cefuroxime Sodium is administered intravenously. Cefuroxime axetil is for oral administration as a tablet or suspension in trading.

Side effects

Are known problems in the gastrointestinal system (nausea, diarrhea, vomiting), as well as dizziness and headache. There is also the risk of an allergic reaction; with existing allergy to β -lactam antibiotics - such as penicillin - is a cross-reaction possible.
