Centropyxis

Centropyxis is a genus of single-celled, amoeba beschalter. It belongs to the group of Difflugina.

Features

For the case of the representatives of Centropyxis two different types are described: one two bilaterally symmetrical, rounded housing, which are flattened toward the front. On the sides and back, they are often studded with spines. The mouth opening is located ventral to the rear and is roundish. as housing is constructed of either organic or mineral particles or diatoms. Shape, size and number of spines are variable. Representatives of this group are usually found in fresh waters. On the other hand, the housing is seen from the circular or oblong abdominal forth from the side region of the mouth is slightly flattened, the mouth opening is located approximately at the end of the housing. Most members of this second group are found in the soil or in drier mosses.

All species of the genus is common that the nucleus to the ovular type belongs, that contains numerous nucleoli.

Occurrence

Centropyxis can be found in fresh water in peat moss, drier mosses and humus-rich soils. They feed on all forms of microorganisms.

System

The genus was first described in 1857 by Friedrich stone. Type species is Centropyxis aculeata. The genus includes about 130 species and many other Untertaxa, including:

  • Centropyxis sphagnicola
  • Centropyxis discoid
  • Centropyxis orbicularis
