Geography

Geographical location

Cerisy- la -Forêt is located in Normandy less than twenty kilometers as the crow inland from the coast to the English Channel in the canton of Saint- Clair -sur- l'Elle on the eastern border of the départements of Manche to Calvados. The community lies on the edge of the Forêt de Cerisy mentioned forest area, the vast majority is located in the neighboring department of Calvados. In the southwest of the municipality lies the valley of the ulna, an influx of Vire.

The seat of the prefecture of the department, the city of Saint- Lô is located about twelve kilometers south-west.

Starting in the south clockwise adjacent to Cerisy- la -Forêt the communes of Saint -Georges- d'Elles, Couvaines and Saint -Jean -de -Savigny, all also in the canton of Saint- Clair -sur- l'Elle and thus in the arrondissement Saint- Lô Manche département of the lie. History

In the 6th century, founded in Cerisy- la -Forêt Saint Vigor, bishop of Bayeux, later run by Benedictine abbey Cerisy- la -Forêt. This is 1032 of Robert I the Magnificent, Duke of Normandy, restored, begins the construction of the still preserved unique abbey church in the same year. The Abbey is the conqueror, richly endowed by Robert's son, William, and later abolished during the French Revolution.

Partnership

On October 10, 1973 Cerisy- la -Forêt includes a partnership with the former town Scharmede in the former county Buren in North Rhine -Westphalia. Since 1 January 1975 Scharmede is a district of Salzkotten in today Paderborn district.

Culture and sights

Structures

The most important building in the village is the native of the 11th and 12th century abbey church, founded in the 6th century Benedictine abbey of Saint -Vigor, a masterpiece of Norman Romanesque art and classified as a monument historique. Here are two châteaux, the Château de La Boulaye from the 18th and 20th centuries and the Château de La Couespellière from the 16th to the 19th century, both of which have each a chapel dedicated to Our Lady. Was built in the 19th century, the mill of Airondel, in the 17th century the mansion Manoir des Rochers.

Archaeological monuments

The best preserved ancient monument in Cerisy- la -Forêt is a tumulus.

Parks and monuments

Noteworthy are the valley of the ulna in the southwest of the community and the Bois l' Abbé -called state forest of Cerisy. In 1976, the 2124 -hectare nature reserve of the national forest of Cerisy ( Réserve naturelle de la Forêt de domaniale Cerisy ) was established to protect the living there Gold Shiny ground beetle.

In the community there are opportunities for hunting and for fishing as well as for hiking and cycling tours.

Regular events

The weekly market takes place every Wednesday, the fair on the first Wednesday in July. The date of the local patron saint's day is Sunday, which is July 14th at the next. The monastery church is the site of the annual series of events " sound and bright lights " ( " Son et Lumière "), which runs from July 14 to September 15.
