Česlovas Juršėnas

Česlovas Juršėnas ( born May 18, 1938 in Panižiškė, Rajongemeinde Ignalina ) is a Lithuanian journalist and politician, former President and Vice- President of the Lithuanian Parliament ( Seimas ).

Life

1955 graduated from the middle school Juršėnas Ignalina; In 1960 he completed a journalism degree from the University of Vilnius. In 1973 he graduated from the Party School of the Communist Party in Leningrad. Later he taught at the Party School of Vilnius.

From 1960 he worked as a journalist from 1960 to 1964 at the newspaper Tiesa ( German: truth ) and from 1964 the Lithuanian Television as editor of foreign news. He became chief editor in the newsroom in 1968. Since 1973 he was in the Communist Party in various functions actively as an agent for Press and Propaganda, a duties at which he also became the first government of independent Lithuania ( 1990-92 ). By transforming the KPL in the Democratic Labor Party of Lithuania, he was the vice-chairman, from 1995 until the merger with the LSDP its chairman.

1990-1992 he was a deputy of the Supreme Soviet ( Aukščiausioji Taryba ), 1992-2012 Member of the Seimas. After Algirdas Brazauskas was elected as the new president, he assumed office as its 1993-1996 chairman of Parliament. From 1996 he was Deputy Chairman of Parliament and April 6 to July 11 again in 2004 interim parliament chairman after the parliamentary chairman Artūras Paulauskas after the impeachment of Rolandas Paksas temporarily held office as president. From 2006 to 2008 he was First Vice- Chairman of Parliament. From April 2008 to November 2008 he was again chairman, then as Deputy Chairman of the Seimas.

He is a member of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party, the first deputy chairman of the party he was from 2001-2004. He now sits in the Presidium of the party.

Juršėnas speaks Russian, English and German.

Juršėnas is married to Jadvyga. His son Saulius Juršėnas is a professor at the University of Vilnius.
