Çeşme [ tʃɛʃmɛ ] ( Greek Κρήνη, Kríni ) is a Turkish resort town with 35 965 inhabitants, about 100 kilometers west of Izmir, and at the same time a district of İzmir Province. The name of Çeşme ( Turkish for wells ) derives from the large number of them.

History

Historically significant was the place by the sea battle of Çeşme from 5 to 7 July 1770 in the Ottoman fleet was destroyed by the fleet of Russia. This event was painted by Jacob Philipp Hackert on behalf of the Empress Catherine II. As he had, however, experienced no sea battle, the Italian-based Hackert was chosen an old frigate and there blown up into the air so he could get a feel of it. This was possible because the Russian fleet was just present. This event was spectacular. The cycle of battle came Hackert to the satisfaction of the Tsarina. Nevertheless, the representation of the burning Turkish frigate learned by Hackert of inaccurate representation of the contemporary criticism. Even Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky the Russian painted this sea battle.

Economy and infrastructure

Many Turks from İzmir and İstanbul have in Çeşme Holiday homes and spend their weekends and much of the summer months there. Since the construction of a new motorway from Izmir to Cesme (O 32), the travel time has reduced considerably and is about 40 minutes. Çeşme has in the past ten years one of the most popular holiday resorts va developed for locals and is considered very exclusive.
