Charlbury ( tʃɑrlb ( ə ) ri / or tʃɔrlb ( ə ) ri /, locally [ tʃɔwbri ] ) is a village and "civil parish" (municipality ) in the valley of the River Evenlode, about 6.5 km north of Witney in Oxfordshire. It lies on the edge of the Wychwood Forest - in the Cotswolds.
Name
The origin of the name is uncertain. It probably comes from the Old English ceorl ( pronunciation: / tʃɔrl / ), which meant " freeman of the lowest class of society ," or by the name ceorl. Both come from the Germanic word * karlaz.
Building
The Church of England parish church of " St. Mary the Virgin " ( the Virgin Mary ) is traditionally associated with Saint Diuma in conjunction, which was the first bishop of Mercia in the 7th century. Charlburys St. Mary's Church was built at the end of the 12th century and was broadens the 13th century. Further changes were made in the 14th century style in the Decorated style, and in the 15th and 16th centuries in the Perpendicular.

In Charlbury two music festivals take place: the Charlbury Riverside Festival and the Cornbury Music Festival at Cornbury Park. Each year, a beer festival is performed, and a street festival, takes place in the traditional Morris dancing.

Charlbury is part of the electoral district of the party chairman of the Conservative Party, David Cameron. The Kreisradsmitglied Charlburys, Neil Owen, Conservative and the two Distriktradsmitglieder, Glena Chadwick and Michael Breakell are both Liberal Democrats.
