Charles Alphonse Pantaléon Pelletier

Sir Charles -Alphonse- Pantaleon Pelletier, KCMG, PC, QC ( born January 22, 1837 in Rivière Ouelle, , Quebec, † April 29, 1911 in Sillery, Quebec ) was a Canadian politician. From 1869 to 1877 he was Liberal deputy of the lower house, then to 1904, member of the Senate. Nearly two years he was a Canadian Minister of Agriculture. Finally, he served from 1908 until his death as vice governor of the province of Quebec.

Biography

Pelletier studied law at the Université Laval in 1860 and was admitted as a lawyer. His profession he held in the provincial capital Quöbec. In addition, he served voluntarily in the militia and rose to the rank of Major. As a candidate of the Liberal Party of Canada, he took up to the general election in 1867, the election in his constituency Kamouraska had to be canceled due to violent clashes between the political camps, however. Finally, he decided in February 1869 by-election for himself.

1872 and 1874 Pelletier succeeded each re-election. In 1873 he was also in the National Assembly of Quebec choose, but gave this mandate to the following year, since dual mandates at the federal and provincial level were no longer allowed. Prime Minister Alexander Mackenzie Pelletier appointed in January 1877 Senator and took him as Minister of Agriculture on in the federal cabinet. His office as a minister he held until October 1878.

From 1885 to 1905 Pelletier was legal counsel to the city of Québec. In the years 1896-1901 he served as Speaker of the Senate. He gave up his Senate seat as Governor General Lord Grey sworn him on 15 September 1908 as Lieutenant Governor of Quebec. This representative office he held until his death.
