Charles Hope, 1st Earl of Hopetoun

Charles Hope, 1st Earl of Hopetoun KT (* 1681, † February 26, 1742 ) was a Scottish nobleman.

Hope was the son of John Hope of Hopetoun; his grandfather was Sir Thomas Hope, 1st Baronet of Craighall. This had acquired the feudal barony of Niddry Castle nom Earl of Winton in 1680. He also acquired by Sir Walter Seton neighboring Feudalbaronie of Abercorn, with the hereditary office of sheriff of the county Linlithgowshire was connected. Charles Hope married in 1689 Henrietta, eldest daughter of William Johnstone, 1st Marquess of Annandale. With her he had thirteen children, of whom but five died in childhood ..

Hope 1703 was raised to the Earl of Hopetoun in the Peerage of Scotland. He supported the merger with England. Since 1722 he was one of the Scottish representative peers in the House of Lords, a position which he held until his death. He was also Lord Lieutenant of Linlithgowshire in 1715. He was also in 1723 Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. From 1740 until his death he was also president of the Bank of Scotland.

In 1738 he was admitted to the Order of thistle. When Hope died in 1742, his title passed to his eldest son John. One of his grandsons was George Johnstone Hope, the most decorated officer who fought in the Battle of Trafalgar.
