Charles P. Clever

Early years and career

Charles Clever was born in 1830 in Cologne. He attended the schools of his native town, and then studied at the University of Bonn. In 1848 he emigrated to the United States, where he in 1850 settled in Santa Fe in the former New Mexico Territory. Between 1855 and 1862, he worked in the trade. In 1857 he was appointed U.S. Marshal for this territory. He was also co-owner of the newspaper " Santa Fe Weekly Gazette", which appeared both in English and in Spanish. After studying law he was admitted to the bar in 1861. He then began his new job in Santa Fe exercise.

Political career and other CV

Clever Charles was a member of the Democratic Party. During the Civil War he served as adjutant general in the New Mexico Territory commander of the local militia. This office he held from 1867-1868 again. At the same time, he was from 1862 to 1867 Attorney General in its territory. After a disputed election Charles Clever moved as a delegate in the U.S. House of Representatives. The election was successfully challenged by his predecessor José Francisco Chaves and Clever had his delegate seat in Congress on February 20, 1869 re- assign them to Chaves.

After the end of his time in Washington Clever again worked as a lawyer. He was also charged with the revision of the laws of New Mexico Territory. Charles Clever died in July 1874 and was buried in Santa Fe.
