Charles von Hügel

Carl Alexander Anselm Freiherr von Hügel ( born April 25, 1796 in Regensburg, † June 2, 1870 in Brussels) was an Austrian diplomat, traveler, naturalist and Hortologe.

Life

Carl von Hügel entered 1811 in the Imperial Austrian army. He took part in the Napoleonic wars and the military intervention in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies 1820/1821 part. In 1824 he appeared as a 28- year-old as a major in retirement and could be further life apparently deny from inherited wealth.

As a traveler and researcher Carl employed by hills from 1830 to 1836 on a six- year journey in Asia and Oceania with the application of a plant collection and the collection of religious history and ethnographic meaningful objects. In his travels came hills in the Himalayas, Kashmir and also to Australia.

Hill bought by his officer service at the edge of contemporary Viennese suburb of Hietzing (now the 13th district, Auhofstraße 13 and 15) is a very large piece of land and built around 1840 (1912 worn ) Villa Hills. He lived in the villa but only until 1848 and sold the property shortly thereafter. The villa was surrounded by a large park, which was built largely parceled before 1900 and (except for the hill park) with a residential neighborhood.

In 1848, Hill went with Metternich, who fled as odious leaders of Austria after the start of the March Revolution in England, after London. From 1849 to 1859, he was appointed by the young Emperor Franz Joseph I, the Austrian ambassador in what was then ruled by a Habsburg sideline Duchy of Tuscany, from 1859 in Brussels.

Carl von hill ethnographic collection is since 1928 an important part of the Museum of Ethnology in Vienna. He is the founder of the Austrian Horticultural Society ( ÖGG ). He was a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

On the hill traveling plants collected the names Hügelie for the blue cone remember ( Trachymene coerulea ) and hill Seideneibisch ( Alyogyne huegelii ).

In 1894 it was named in honor a Hügelgasse in the 13th district, right next to his former villa, named. As this was in 1902 renamed after the later inhabitants of the villa in Braunschweiggasse, one named 1903 today Hügelgasse in the west adjacent to Old Hietzing part of the district sub - St. - Veit to Carl von hill. In this part of the district, but not at the hill street, there is also the scale on a small part of the former area of the Baron Hill Park, with its 1901 by garden friends set up there monument.
