Charlotte von Ahlefeld

Life

Charlotte of Ahlefeld was the daughter of the regiment commander Alexander Christoph August von Seebach and his wife Albertine Wilhelmine of Ingersleben. Their education they received through home teachers and governesses. Her poems that she wrote as a ten- year-old, should have impressed Goethe.

On May 21, 1798 married the landowner Johann Rudolf von Ahlefeld on Saxtorf, Sehestedt and Ludwigsburg. They were married by Johann Gottfried Herder in the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Weimar. The couple had three sons: Frederick (1799-1862), Erich (1800-1853) and Hermann ( 1806-1855 ). In the St. Peter and Paul Church in Sehestedt is an endowed of Charlotte of Ahlefeld painting today.

In 1799 she published her second novel, "Mary Smith", a long time was an enormous popular success. She has published more than 30 novels and collections of short stories and a volume of poems, usually under pseudonyms, as was customary for female authors at the time. Her novels and short stories she wrote in the style of the classical novel or the rationalist family romance. The love conflicts are often placed in the " chivalry " and end with " renunciation ".

From February to August 1803, she had an exchange of correspondence and personal contact with the sculptor Christian Friedrich Tieck in Weimar. 1807 she separated from her husband " because of his infidelity and violence ." and lived in Schleswig as a freelance writer.

In the fall of 1821 Charlotte von Ahlefeld again lived in Weimar to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Charlotte von Stein, Charlotte Ahlefelds sister Amalia was her daughter to be close. Friendly she was also with Sophie Mereau. She corresponded with Clemens von Brentano.

Her literary work ended in 1832 with her novel The rod of duty. By the end of her life she lived in retirement, but had corresponded frequently with their publishers and friends. 1846 she moved to Bad Teplitz for health reasons. On November 25, 1848 her husband died on his estate in Sehestedt and left a considerable fortune. Charlotte died on 27 July 1849 in Bad Teplitz. She was buried in Prague. In Teplitz, she was set the monument.
