Chess of the Grandmasters

Chess Grand Master is a former German television show. The program was designed by Claus Spahn, editorially supervised and moderated.

History

It aired from 1983 to 2005 once a year on television in the West German Radio (WDR). The concept of the program was that two chess grandmasters were playing a game of chess against each other and this is commented by the two grandmasters Helmut Pfleger and Vlastimil Hort, and later by the chess program Fritz and was analyzed. The winner received the prize of the WDR television chess and could in fact defend this title against a new challenger.

The invited players included, among other things, Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik, Viswanathan Anand, Péter Lékó and Jan Timman. The first batch in 1983 denied Anatoly Karpov and then the strongest German player Robert Hübner. In the last event of 2005, the two commentators nurses and Hort even met each other.

In 1995, Kasparov won in two games against the chess program Genius 3 with 1.5-0.5. Since he had recently lost at a rapid chess tournament in London against this program, this competition was a greater attention in the media given.

Game examples

Among the notable games of the series included the victory, the then four -year-old Judit Polgár against the experienced German Grandmaster Rainer Knaak 1990 and the defeat Huebner against Kasparov in 1992 in only 15 moves.
