Christian Blom

Christian Blom ( born October 20, 1782 the court Narverud in Tønsberg, Norway, † April 22, 1861 in Drammen ) was a Norwegian composer, shipowner and merchant.

He is known as a composer of the Norwegian song Sønner av Norge ( Sons of Norway ) in 1821, with whom he won (the health of Norway ) is a Norwegian national anthem in the same year, the competition of the company Norges Vel. The song was very popular during the 19th century, but was in 1864 replaced by the current national anthem Yes, vi elsker dette lands. Great popularity enjoyed his overture Norsk Nationalouverture (1821 ) for chorus and orchestra, to which its national anthem supplied thematic material.

He played cello, violin and flute as a good amateur. In 1814 he founded a musical society that was the musical center of the city until 1840 in Drammen. In 1823 he co-founded a singing school, and from 1849 he devoted himself to the men singing.

He mainly composed choral works, but his three surviving string quartets are now considered his most important works. His music reveals influences of the Viennese Classical and early Romantic, but occasionally are also allusions to Norwegian folk music.
