Christian Tumi

Christian Cardinal Tumi Wiyghan (born 15 October 1930 in Kikaikelaki, Cameroon ) is Archbishop Emeritus of Douala.

Life

Christian Wiyghan Tumi studied at several seminars in Nigeria and at the universities of Freiburg and Lyon trays Catholic theology and philosophy. In 1966 he was ordained a priest and was used in the next two years as a pastor in the Archdiocese of Bamenda. From 1967 to 1969 he worked as a teacher at the junior seminary of Souppo - Bouea. After further studies in Europe, he worked in the years 1973 to 1979 as rector of the seminary of Bambui and as a pastor in the Archdiocese of Bamenda.

1979 Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Yagoua and donated him on January 6, 1980, the episcopal ordination. In 1982 he appointed him Koadjutorerzbischof and in 1984 Archbishop of Garoua. From 1985 to 1991 he was president of the Cameroon Episcopal Conference.

Christian Wiyghan Tumi was taken by John Paul II in the consistory of 28 June 1988 ceremony as cardinal priest with the titular church of Santi Martyrs dell'Uganda a Poggio Ameno in the College of Cardinals, since 1991 Archbishop of Douala.

Tumi is regarded as the leading figure of the political opposition in Cameroon and as the most important opponent of President Paul Biya.

In October 2005, he drew attention to himself when he is in a CNN interview, the use of condoms for married advocated shortly after the end of the world Synod of Bishops, when one spouse is infected with HIV, to prevent infection of the other spouse. Tumi stated in this interview further that there is currently a change of policy from the previous traditional line of the Roman Catholic Church in the Vatican.
