Christoph Gottfried Andreas Giebel

Christian Gottfried Andreas Giebel (* September 13, 1820 in Quedlinburg, † November 14, 1881 in Halle ( Saale) ) was a German zoologist and paleontologist.

Life

As the son of Christoph Kalkbrenner, whose ancestors already had the lime kiln, and his wife Johanna wedge wooden Christian Gottfried Gable was born on September 13, 1820 in Quedlinburg. There he was able to employ an early age with rocks. Also bone finds of glacial living being, he examined what sparked his interest in the natural sciences. He attended a high school in his hometown and then to mathematics and science study, the University of Halle. His teachers were Ernst Friedrich Germar and Hermann Burmeister. At the University, he founded the Science Club. For this gables served as Director and later published with the club the magazine for the whole science.

Initially wanted to study gable for a teaching position, it was this desire to now and studied paleontology and zoology. He received his doctorate in 1845 in Halle with a thesis on fossil hyenas. In 1848 he qualified as a lecturer in these subjects. He held it several times representative of Burmeister and Germar, who were abroad, lectures on zoology. This was enough for the end but not enough to make enough money, he wanted to become a tenured university professor, this place did not get at first but. It was not until 1858 he was appointed extraordinary professor; after Burmeister was eventually resettled in 1861, Gable was his successor as professor of zoology at the University of Halle and the director of the Zoological Museum. Therefore changed his interests, he had previously employed with extinct animals, he now turned to the live animals.

Wilhelm Hess describes gable as hardworking and knowledgeable zoologist, who faced hostile to Darwinism. Also, it did manage gable to express the results of his scientific research to understand. However, his health was affected by continuous gable -operation, because of a stone suffering he had to undergo surgery. Shortly before his death he gave up his professorship and suffered several strokes, finally, on 14 November 1881, he died in Hall at the age of 61 years.

Gable was a member of the Leopoldina and honorary doctor of medicine. Special diligence he showed in publications that were mostly reference books or manuals.
