Cimetière des Chiens et Autres Animaux Domestiques

The Cimetière des chiens ( German: Dog Cemetery ) is a pet cemetery on the Isle of Ravageurs in Asnières -sur -Seine, Hauts -de -Seine département, France, on the northwestern shore of the Seine across from Paris.

History

On March 25, 1899 was published by journalist Georges Harnois under the title " L' Ami des Chiens " ("The Friend of the dog " ) is an article in which he revealed his intention to build a dog cemetery in Paris. Then he and colleague journalists and women's rights activist Marguerite Durand on May 2, 1899, the Société Française du Cimetière pour chiens anonymous et autres animaux domestiques ("French Cemetery Association for dogs and other pets AG"). On 15 June 1899, the site was acquired in Asnières and dug it. After the operator had assured to consider the new law of 21 June 1898, the elimination of the domestic, the prefect had no objections to the cemetery, which was finally opened to the end of summer 1899. He is thus considered the oldest pet cemetery in the world. Here also cats, rabbits, budgies, but also a lion and a horse are buried next to dogs.

Since its opening, the cemetery of a large inflow enjoyed. Until October 20, 1900 193 burials have already been counted, in 1988 there were 55,000 grave stones. Meanwhile, 100,000 animals have been buried. Rin Tin Tin († August 10, 1932 ) is buried here; His successor in the eponymous television series ( from 15 October 1954) is not in Asnières. Also worth mentioning is the 1919 buried mascot of French infantry, dog Mémère. Also buried here are the Lion of the House co-founder of the cemetery Marguerite Durand and the lap animals by Camille Saint- Saëns, the composer of Carnival of the Animals.

Grave robbery

On the night of February 5, 2012 the grave of the small dog Tipsy was broken into and stolen an occupied with diamond necklace worth 9,000 euros.

Others

The pet cemetery is now run by the city of Asnières and was made in 1987 by the French government as historical monuments.
