Cimișlia District

The Rajon Cimişlia is a Raion in Moldova. The Rajonshauptstadt is Cimişlia.

Geography

The Rajon Cimişlia located in the southern half of the country and has a narrow border section with Ukraine. In Rajonsgebiet springs from the river Jalpuch. Within the borders of Moldova Rajon Cimişlia to the Rajons Basarabeasca, Căuşeni Hînceşti, Ialoveni and Leova as well as the autonomous region of Gagauzia.

History

The Rajon Cimişlia exists in the present boundaries since 2003. Until February 2003, the area belonged in common with today's Rajons Basarabeasca, Hînceşti and Leova the now defunct county Lapusna ( Judeţul Lapusna ). Even earlier - 1918-1940 - Cimişlia was part of the Romanian circle Tighina ( Judeţul Tighina ).

Demographics

1959 49 624 inhabitants lived in what is now Rajons. In the following twenty years, the population increased and amounted to 63 048 in 1970 and 65 667 in 1979. While the number of residents increased nationwide to the 1989 census, it decreased slightly to 65 267 in Rajon Cimişlia. Following the national trend, the population of the Rajons dropped to 60 925 by 2004.

Ethnic groups

According to the 2004 census put the Moldovans with 86.9 % the proportionally largest ethnic group in Rajon Cimişlia, followed by Ukrainians at 5.5%, the Russians and the Bulgarians with 3.9% to 2.2 %. Smaller minorities form the Gagauz and Romanians with 0.5 %.
