Cirueña

Cirueña and Ciriñuela are small, closely spaced locations on the Camino de Santiago Camino Francés in the Autonomous Community of La Rioja. Administratively Ciriñuela belongs to Cirueña.

History

Ciriñuela 972 is first mentioned in writing untern the name Cironia, a century later than Cirunnuela. In donation documents Alfonso VII of Castile and later the Catholic Monarchs, it is then called Ciriñuela.

In Cirueña was in the 10th century, the first Count of Castile, Fernan Gonzalez, captured by the Navarrese troops.

A written record can be found at the foundation of the monastery of Santa María la Real de Nájera in 1052. García Sánchez III. of Navarre equipped the Convention in with lands from, including Cirueña including dependent communities belonged.

Because of violent conflict, the village in the 14th century almost completely depopulated. After a suspension of duties for ten years came in 1387, a greater number of former residents in the village back.

Cirueña belonged to the province of Burgos, until 1833, the province of Logroño was founded.

Religious Architecture

The parish church of Cirueña is dedicated to St. Andrew. It was built in 1965 on the foundations of a pre-Romanesque church from the 10th century.

In Ciriñuela is the San Millán Church. It dates from the 15th century and found in the 18th and 19th century architectural changes. The altarpiece was designed in the rococo style.

Sports & Leisure

In December 2003 the Golf Course Campo de Golf Rioja Alta Golf Club was inaugurated with clubhouse and adjoining residential park.
