Clemens (impostor)

Clemens († 16 in Rome), also known as pseudo - Agrippa, was a slave of Agrippa Postumus, who had been adopted by the Roman Emperor Augustus in the year 4 as a possible heir to the throne, but fell slightly out of favor later and banished to the island Planasia. After the death of Augustus in the year 14 Clemens is said to have intended to Agrippa to free from exile, probably to make him cry out from the troops in Germania against Tiberius emperor. After perhaps initiated by Tiberius assassination of Agrippa Clemens gave themselves out as this. He succeeded in a considerable number of followers to rally in Italy around so that Tiberius began to perceive him as a serious threat to his fledgling autocracy. The Emperor capture the Pretender and kill without public trial in the palace.
