Clement Quartey

Clement "Ike" Quartey ( born April 12, 1938 and Isaac Quartey ) is a former boxer from Ghana.

After Ghana became independent in 1957, took thirteen Ghanaian athletes first time in 1960 under the name of Ghana at the Olympics in part, after 1952 in Helsinki seven athletes had competed under the name Gold Coast.

Clement Quartey entered into Rome in the Light Welterweight ( class to 63.5 kg) of Boxturniers to. He defeated the Moroccans Boubekeur and the Iraqis Karkhi clear 5-0 on points. In the quarterfinals he won against the Koreans Kim 3-2 judges' votes. The semi-final turned out for Quartey after the Pole Marian Kasprzyk did not compete. Only in the final Quartey hit on an opponent from Europe. Bohumil Nemecek from the CSSR had beaten the Americans Quincey Daniels 5-0 in the other semifinal. In the final Nemecek was clearly superior technically, Quartey you could tell that he had little international experience and so the result was 5-0 for Nemecek from unique.

The silver medal for Quartey was the first Olympic medal for a black African athletes at all. To-date ( 2013) no Ghanaians could win except Quartey gold or silver at the Olympics. 1962 won Clement Quartey then the title at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth. His 31 years younger brother Isufu was under the same nickname as Clement Quartey, Ike Quartey namely, 1994 WBA world champion professional boxer in the welterweight division.
