Ike Quartey

Ike Quartey ( born November 27, 1969 in Bukom, Ghana as Isufu Quartey ) is a Ghanaian boxer.

Amateur

Quartey is the youngest of 27 children, his brother Clement won an Olympic silver medal in 1960. Ike was not as successful. 1987, he won the bronze medal at the Junior World Championships in Havana and took part in the 1988 Olympic Games, where he was eliminated in the first round. His record was 50-4.

Professional

He was following professional and punched initially mainly in his native country and France. On June 4, 1994, he won in Levallois-Perret the WBA welterweight title against the Venezuelan southpaw Crisanto España. He defended the title successfully six times, including against the southpaw Andrew Murray, Vince Phillips (who later Kostya Tszyu defeated by KO ), Oba Carr and José Luis López. In 1998, he played no struggle, whereupon him the WBA title was revoked due to inactivity. In February 1999, he narrowly lost against WBC champion Oscar de la Hoya.

After this fight he got into the next higher weight class, the light middleweight, but did not win a major battle more, among other things, he was defeated in 2000 the IBF titlist Fernando Vargas.

After five years of ring break he tried a comeback in 2005, was subject to controversial Vernon Forrest and clear Ronald " Winky" Wright.
