Closer is the second and final studio album by the British post-punk band Joy Division.

History

The recording of the album found in mid to late March 1980 held in London. Closer was finally published on 18 July 1980 to Factory Records. At the time of publication singer Ian Curtis was two months dead, the rest of the band later made under the name New Order on.

In April 1980, the song Love Will Tear Us Apart appeared as a harbinger of the new album. He was later - after Curtis' death - the most successful song of the band and reached number 13 on the UK Singles Charts. Closer reached number 6 in the UK album charts.

Cover

The cover, which shows a tomb in the cemetery Staglieno in Genoa, Italy, was designed by Martyn Atkins and Peter Saville. The photograph comes from the French photographer Bernard Pierre Wolff, who also provided the cover photograph for Love Will Tear Us Apart.

The album is considered, like its predecessor Unknown Pleasures, a milestone in the history of music that has influenced many other bands.
