Coat of arms of Ã…land

The coat of arms of Åland shows on a blue shield a running golden deer with golden antlers. On the coat of arms rests a flat crown of pearls, an old Swedish krona.

Åland got his coat of arms before the funeral of the Swedish king Gustav I Vasa 1560th

The original draft contained two deer in a field with nine white roses. However Åland was never granted this coat of arms, but only the coat of arms with a stag.

In the 1940s the Heraldic Office discovered Sweden ( Riksheraldikerämbetet ) that a gross mistake was made at the crest design 400 years ago. The coat of arms of Åland was originally intended for Oland. Öland, an island off the coast of Småland, was also affected by this error. On Öland lived many deer and it was by a royal hunting ground, however, had no historical connection to the nine Finnish roses which adorned the coat of arms.
