Col de Portet d'Aspet

The Col de Portet- d'Aspet is a mountain pass in the French Pyrenees. It is located in the department of Haute- Garonne in the Midi-Pyrénées region. With a height of 1,069 m, the Pass is located in the village of Portet d' Aspet and separates the valleys of the rivers Ger ( west ) and Bouigane ( east ). The Col is part of a file to the Pic de Paloumère. About the Pass leads the secondary road D 618, which connects the places Aspet and Audressein (Ariège).

From Audressein or from the east, take the route to the pass is 18.14 km long. This 557 meter height difference to be overcome. In the village of St Lary still remain 5.9 km and it starts the real climb with an average gradient of 6.8% ( at maximum: 10.6 %). The rise of the West begins in Aspet and is first completed on a short piece of D 5, D is reached before the 618. Overall, the increase has a length of 14.31 kilometers with 594 meters height difference. On this route, the fun begins right from Sengouagnet. The rest of the route from here is 4.4 km long and the average gradient is 9.6% ( at maximum: 12.6 %).

Tour de France

In 1910, the Col du Portet d' Aspet was crossed for the first time of the tour. First winner of the mountains classification at the time was Octave Lapize. Since the end of World War II the Portet d' Aspet is a regular part of the Tour de France, for the last time in 2011.

Fabio Casartelli

1995 pressure Fabio Casartelli on the descent of the Portet in a massive crash and hurt himself badly on the head. Despite an initially successful resuscitation Casartelli died hours later in hospital from his injuries. In his honor, located at the accident site a plaque and a little above it a stele. As you can see on pictures from the time of the accident, the road was then secured by single sharp-edged stones. Meanwhile, on the west ramp, in which the fatal crash occurred, but instead a continuous and free of sharp edges wall was erected. The original boundary stones are still present on the Ostabfahrt.
