Col des Montets

The Col des Montets is a 1461 m high mountain pass in the French Alps, which connects the valley of the Arve and the local main town of Chamonix to the Swiss canton of Valais.

Pass

At the summit is an information center of the nature reserve of the Aiguilles Rouges is a botanical trail information. The 46th degree of latitude runs close to the pass. It is marked with a small plaque.

Traffic links

The pass connects the Swiss town of Martigny with Chamonix, although yet to be crossed on the Swiss side of the Col de la Forclaz. The railway line Saint- Gervais- Vallorcine crosses under the pass in 1883 m long tunnel. Over the pass the road D 1506 runs (until 2006 the RN 506). In winter the pass is always locked, but the use of the railway tunnel is then possible for vehicles, which was equipped for this with a concrete deck next to the track. The traffic is then controlled by a control system, and the trains run only from and to Montroc on the French side (instead of Vallorcine on the Swiss side ).
