Colchester County, Nova Scotia

Colchester County is a county in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia.

The name Colchester was taken over in 1780, and is derived from the town of Colchester in Essex. Previously called the Cobequid County County, derived from the Mi'kmaq word " Wagobagitk ", which translates as " the bay rises steeply " means, so that the adjacent Cobequid Bay is meant.

The District Colchester, formerly part of Halifax County, was received County - rights. Three years later, in 1835, in 1838, a clear boundary between the Cumberland County and the Colchester County was established. 1940, the municipality of Parrsboro was divided and annexed a part of Colchester County. 1871, the boundaries between the counties Hants County and Colchester and between Colchester and Halifax County have been set. 1880, the limit was changed to Halifax County again. 1897 some parts of the border between Colchester and Cumberland County were eventually corrected.

The border issue between Cumberland County Colchester and was later raised again and was task a commission of inquiry in 1946. In January 1959, the report was, however, shelved.
