History

Coles was founded in 1914 by George James ( GJ) Coles. Cole's father had a " Coles Store" in Tasmania. G.J. Coles opened on April 9, its first store under the name " Coles Variety Store " in Smith Street in Collingwood neighborhood in Melbourne.

1960 opened the first Coles supermarket in the Melbourne suburb of North Balwyn. In 1973 it was Coles first time to operate branches in all major cities of Australia. In the 1980s the stores were renamed " Coles New World" or even " New World". In the early 1990s, the stores were renamed " Coles Supermarkets ". In 2005, the " circled tick " logo was introduced, which is still relevant today. The logo was already kicked off in 2003 as an alternative logo in appearance.

2006 began to rename the branches of BI -LO, Kmart, First Choice Liquor, Liquorland, Theo's and other chain stores, which included all or part of the Coles Group ( Coles Myer until early 2006 ), in Coles. However, the change of name was stopped due to declining sales of the stores renamed in 2007. Therefore, all retail chains are still present on the Australian market. Branches, which were located in close proximity to an old Coles store was renamed " Coles Discount Grocery " and converted to the discount concept.

The Western Australia Newmart Supermarkets called BI -LO stores have already been renamed in 2002 and 2003. Newmart branches, which were in the neighborhood of a Coles store were sold to Foodland and renamed " Action Supermarkets ".

On 2 July 2007, the Australian company Wesfarmers Coles Group Limited took over Australian dollars 22 billion. The acquisition was completed in October 2007. In August 2007 Wesfarmers announced his plans for the restructuring of Coles Group. The group should be divided into three divisions, namely, supermarkets, liquor stores and small shops.
