Comiso

Comiso is a municipality in the province of Ragusa in the region of Sicily in Italy with 29.290 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Comiso is located 22 km west of Ragusa in the south of Sicily. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture ( wine and vegetables) and crafts ( blacksmithing, carpentry and marble processing).

The districts are Comiso, Pedalino and Quaglio.

The neighboring municipalities are Chiaramonte Gulfi, Ragusa and Vittoria.

Comiso has a railway station, which lies on the railway line Caltanissetta Gela - Syracuse.

History

In ancient times, Comiso (Greek Kasmenai ) was a Greek colony. The city was founded in 642 BC by the Syracusans, 212 BC it was destroyed by the Romans. 1693, the city was badly damaged in an earthquake. Comiso was built on the same site. In 1983, the NATO stationed in today's commercial airport Comiso cruise missiles, which were later withdrawn as a result of the INF Treaty again.

  • Spa, it is from the Roman era, there are still remnants of mosaics from the 2nd century AD to visit
  • St. Mary's Church from the 15th century, when the 1693 earthquake badly damaged, in which reconstruction was significantly changed the church under construction

  • Church of San Francesco, built in the 13th century, in the 15th century a monastery was built
  • Annunziata church rebuilt in the 16th century, 1772-1773 and provided with a baroque facade.
  • Naselli castle from the Byzantine period
