Confolens

Confolens (pronounced [ kɔfɔlɑ ], Occitan Confolent ) is a commune with 2676 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Charente in the Poitou -Charentes; it is the administrative center for the district and cantonal Confolens Confolens -Nord and Sud - Confolens.

Geography

Confolens lies at the confluence of the Vienne and Goire - hence the name (from the Latin confluens ) - each 60 to 70 kilometers from Limoges, Angoulême and Poitiers. The city is the center of the Charente limousine on the border between Langue d' oïl and Langue d'oc.

History

Confolens was first mentioned in the 11th century. It belonged to the lords of Chabanais, but was - divided into two dioceses - with the river as a border. In the 12th century the city walls were built. The Barony Confolens was in 1604 raised to the county Confolens.
