Connexion by Boeing

Connexion by Boeing ( in German as " (Internet ) Connection by Boeing " ) was a subsidiary of Boeing, which offered a system for using the internet on an airplane. This service allowed travelers a broadband Internet connection to use both wired Ethernet and through a wireless 802.11 Wi -Fi connection. Because this concept turned out to be economically very successful, the service was only offered from May 2004 until the end of 2006 and adjusted thereafter.

History

The concept of " Connexion by Boeing " was first introduced in April 2000. The FAA certification was awarded the system in May 2002, although it won the World Travel Award in late 2003 -. February 2005 even for a second time - there were only a few customers. The first was the Lufthansa where Connexion by Boeing was built starting in May 2004 in the long-haul fleet (Lufthansa Flynet ). Later, ANA, Japan Airlines and SAS were added. On 26 June 2006 it was announced that Boeing wants to separate from the group division. We review a sale, a partnership with another company or even an attitude, as few airlines and private customers had ordered the system. Reasons for this were about the high conversion costs, to receive the signals from the satellites, are also the associated antennas very large and therefore increase especially in smaller aircraft kerosene consumption. On August 17, 2006 Boeing announced then that there is now hiring the service because it was not worthwhile for the reasons mentioned above.

Today it provides an alternative to the company OnAir available that would like to offer about Ryanair for GSM connections. Even the basic system is to be continued by Panasonic and even expanded.

With the new partners Panasonic Avionics Lufthansa is currently planning to bring back to their aircraft the Internet under the name " Flynet ". Accordingly, the service to be used on selected North Atlantic flights for free until January 2011.
