Constantin Brâncoveanu

Constantin Brâncoveanu (* 1654, † August 15, 1714 in Istanbul) was Prince of Wallachia from 1688 to 1714.

Life

The prince was an artistically inclined conveyor. At the time of Constantin Brâncoveanu the Romanian Renaissance, the so-called Brâncoveanu style was born, which is characterized mainly by its ornate stonework. The ruler donated, among other things, the monastery Horezu. In his political transactions, the prince had no lucky hand. By type of Moldavian prince, he ran with the Ottomans, which he had to pay as compensation for the internal autonomy of his principality tribute, a dangerous double game. As the Porte learned that the Wallachian prince had had with the Russian Tsar and the Austrian imperial family secret negotiations, was the Sultan Ahmed III. the prince and his four sons arrested during a visit to Istanbul. Constantin Brancoveanu 1714, together with his four sons and his son- executed by the Turks to destroy the Wallachian independence. Brâncoveanu had preferred rather to suffer martyrdom than to betray his faith and convert to Islam.

1992 Brancovenesti was canonized by the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church.
