Constantin Hansen

Carl Christian Constantin Hansen ( born November 3, 1804 in Rome, † March 29, 1880 in Copenhagen) was a Danish history painter.

Life

Hansen was the son of the painter Hans Hansen ( 1769-1828 ). He arrived in Rome to the world and was baptized until the following year in Vienna; his family was there on her return to Denmark station.

From 1817 Hansen began at the Art Academy in Copenhagen to study architecture. In 1821 he broke from this study and devoted himself henceforth entirely to painting. Hansen became a pupil in the studio of Christoffer Wilhelm Eckerberg and was able to debut four years later with some portraits at an exhibition of the Academy successfully.

1835 Hansen was whether his services a two-year scholarship, which enabled him to travel to Italy. In the late summer of the same year he traveled through Berlin, Dresden, Prague, Nuremberg to Munich. From there, via Salzburg and Florence to Rome. There he soon joined his countryman, the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen and his circle.

From Rome undertook Hansen in 1838 together with the painter Jørgen Roed one more week study trip to Naples and Pompeii. This he repeated the following year with Christians Købke and Georg Christian Hilker and then also visited Paestum. Studied on two trips and copied Hansen with his friends for the most part ancient frescoes.

One of his most important paintings from his time in Italy was the 1837 created " A company of Danish artists in Rome "; commissioned by the Art Association of Copenhagen. As a portrayal of an unorthodox meeting like-minded people, reflects this contradicts the new self- consciousness of art acting civil society and thus became the oft-cited example.

Hansen held on his return at some time in Munich, to acquire at the local art academy fresco techniques. This was necessary because the resulting state contract. Along with Georg Christian Hilker he should decorate the lobby of the University of Copenhagen, what to do with themes from Greek mythology also brought about 1844-1853. The painter August Andreas Jens Dorff could restore the factory with Hansen's original boxes later. The art critic Emil Hannover described the work as follows:

" [ He created ] ... with clearer and deeper insight into the nature of ancient painting and Greek mythology, a circle of images, under the appropriate works from the most recent time have in terms of purity and austerity of style hardly second to none ."

Between 1861 and 1865 he was entrusted with the decoration of the Hansen Court Theatre in Copenhagen; he was assisted by Christian Albrecht Jensen. On the decoration of the cathedral of Roskilde Hansen was also involved. In addition, he created in his later work several etchings, with whom he most often themed vistas of landscapes and architecture.

On the occasion of his 50th birthday in 1854 Hansen was honored with the appointment as Adjunct Professor and took him on his sixtieth the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts as a member on. After the death of Vilhelm Marstrand in 1873 was entrusted Hansen showing half to lead the Academy. 1878 Hansen put down all the offices and retired into private life. After a short illness, he died at the age of 75 years on 29 March 1880 in Copenhagen.

Of his children, the painter Elisabeth Konstantin -Hansen, the tapestry artist Katharina Hansen and the theologian Sigurd Hansen are mentioned.
